Here's what a Chief Geopolitical Officer should be monitoring today.
*** 5 issues Caracal Global is watching today ***
1. Hormuz is now a diesel crisis: Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has all but halted. Iran struck two vessels on Wednesday. The economic pain is migrating from gas pumps to freight: diesel shortages are hitting trucking, agriculture, and heavy industry harder than passenger fuel.
2. Is Taiwan more vulnerable? The Iran war has consumed critical US weapons stockpiles. Full replacement could take six years. Senior US officials are now saying publicly what they have been saying privately: contingency plans to defend Taiwan are under strain. Beijing is watching — and preparing for its summit with Trump from a position of unusual leverage.
3. Xi was ready. Trump was not. As the two leaders prepare to meet, the Iran conflict has handed Beijing a strategic windfall: dollar dominance is being tested, China's payment infrastructure is gaining global adoption, and Washington's diplomatic leverage is diminishing.
4. Meta's layoffs signal an AI shift: This is not a cost-cutting cycle. It is a preview. As Zuckerberg races toward superintelligence, human headcount is being repriced across the industry. A new FT-Focaldata poll shows that high earners are pulling ahead in AI productivity, while lower earners fall further behind. The workplace divide is hardening into data.
5. Trump's political foundation is cracking: Disapproval of the president has reached its highest level of his second term. The Iran war, rising gas prices, and economic anxiety are the drivers. MAHA voters are showing signs of disillusionment. With 2026 midterms approaching, the political coalition that enabled this foreign policy posture is beginning to fray — and the legislative environment will shift with it.
