US political party preferences shifted significantly during 2021.

A new Gallup analysis examined how Americans' partisan preferences shifted over the year 2021, with findings indicating momentum for Republicans heading into this midterm election year.

Gallup found that Americans' partisan preferences were relatively stable when looking at the entire year 2021. But there was a discernible shift when the year was broken down into quarters. In the first quarter of 2021, Democrats had a 9-point advantage over Republicans. Still, by the final quarter of the year, that had shifted sharply to a 5-point Republican advantage, according to Gallup's aggregate data.

Party identification trends can often be strong indicators of how a party will fare in House elections. And most in Washington already predict a bleak outcome for Democrats in November in both the House and the Senate.

Look for party identification to be viewed as a measure of voter enthusiasm.

Big Tech bets big on offices.

Tech companies held 36 of the 100 biggest office leases in 2021, up from 18 in 2020, per a new CBRE analysis.

CBRE reports that many of last year's largest leases came in big, gateway markets like Manhattan, Washington, DC, and Boston.

Overall, office leasing in the US was up nearly 27% last year, CBRE's Manish Kashyap notes. "The tech industry is the big engine there."

Look for ongoing expansion to give Big Tech the confidence to start making longer-term office leasing decisions.
